There are whisky releases that make you smile. And then there is Brûlée Royale, the new limited edition from Compass Box, the one that makes you want to grab a blowtorch and shout "service!". To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the London house didn't just add a pretty ribbon: they decided to reinvent crème brûlée... in a malted version.

And honestly? We weren't expecting such an ode to indulgence.

Compass Box Brûlée Royale: A Nod to Versailles... in Whisky Version

Compass Box is known for telling stories, but this time, the brand is taking the decor all the way to Versailles. Not the Versailles of gilding and the Hall of Mirrors: the one of bustling kitchens, where François Massialot, a discreet but essential chef of the 17th century, caramelized sugar with a red-hot iron to invent what would become crème brûlée.

Three centuries later, the Compass Box team takes the idea and transforms it... into scotch. Brûlée Royale aims to be the "liberated" heir to Nectarosity while embracing going further in density, intensity, and pure pleasure! In other words: it's rich, it's generous, and above all, it's unapologetic!

A Blend Conceived as a Dessert

Samuel Travers, master blender at Compass Box, states it clearly:

“ Brûlée Royale s’est construit par retraits successifs. On enlève, encore. On goûte, encore. On cherche la justesse. Jusqu’à ce qu’une ligne émerge limpide, nette, presque évidente. Chaque note y trouve sa place. Et les silences, eux aussi, y font œuvre de précision. ”

The result: a harmony that functions like a multi-layered pastry tasting.

The four single malts that make up this blend were not chosen for their individual prestige, but for their ability to play together:

  • Clynelish 7 years brings warm Tarte Tatin, juicy nectarine, and crème anglaise.
  • Benrinnes 17 years plays the pastry chef with notes of vanilla cheesecake.
  • Speyburn 2000 adds freshness, frothy milk, and red apple.
  • Ardbeg 21 years, the discreet troublemaker, adds a light smokiness and a hint of candied raspberry.

A liquid dessert? Yes, clearly.

Wood, Time, and Fire

Beyond the poetry, Compass Box relies on meticulous work on oak. All casks come from Independent Stave Co. in Missouri, toasted and then re-charred with precision to release caramel, molasses, and roasted peach without becoming bitter.

This is where Brûlée Royale finds its famous "milky" texture and its almost dessert-like smoothness. Crème brûlée in a glass, but without a crust to break.

On the nose, on the palate... a real birthday dessert

The tasting sheet is a pleasure:

Nose: instant crème brûlée, poached pears, fresh vanilla, Danish pastry, burnt sugar.

Mouth: thick crème fraîche, honeyed malt, grilled peaches, crème anglaise, tarte Tatin, panna cotta... and even a touch of banana split in the finish.

A label that tells a story

The packaging is a surreal scene inspired by the kitchens of the Palace of Versailles: fire, copper, costumes, ancestral know-how... It's halfway between a period painting and a slightly fiery dream. François Massialot himself appears there, fireplace poker in hand, as a nod to the original gesture that inspired this whiskey.

Verdict

Brûlée Royale is not just an anniversary whiskey. It's a declaration of love for indulgence, for artisanal blending, and for that little moment of grace when sugar, under the flame, becomes caramel.

A whiskey for epicureans, the curious, and those who like it when a tasting tells a story.
